"The Mixed Bag" @ Galerie Gigi
Who: James Taylor Bonds, John Fields, Hayley Gaberlavage, John K. Lawson, Jimmy Mac, and Vitalija Svencionyte
What: “The Mixed Bag” Art Exhibition
When: Opening reception: Friday, October 2, 2009 at 6PM. Exhibition runs through 10/30/09
Where: Galerie Gigi 627 Saint Peter St. (between Royal and Chartres)
Press Release:
Galerie Gigi is proud to present “The Mixed Bag”. This group exhibition, curated by Terrence Sanders features large-scale works that reflect the diversity, eccentricity, and individuality of New Orleans’ unique visual culture. The artists featured in this exhibition explore the personal, the political, and the geographical narrative of a city, a nation, and a people full of contrasts.
When Katrina ravished John K. Lawson’s studio containing 25 years of artwork, the artist’s work turned to exploring the fragility of life using salvaged artwork and encaustic. Recently Lawson has incorporated blueprints from the 1984 World Fair and New Orleans city ordinance and zoning maps into his work, presenting a refashioned body of work that has stepped out of the personal and into the world at large.
Birmingham native John Fields works with opposing forces. Whether it is the fundamental contrasts of black and white, the humorous and the horrible, or the sexy and the disgusting, his work attempts to present both sides of a question, forcing the opposing sides into a single gestalt unity. His new body of work explores personal and political questions involving the new, so-called “post-racism” America that began with last November’s elections.
James Taylor Bonds’ work is a depiction of New Orleans as seen through the eyes of a southern boy lost in the romanticism and despair of the stories of a city who sleeps with its’ past. Bonds offers the vision of a silent wanderer, exploring a city whose history is prominently stained on its streets and its’ people.
Jimmy Mac has traded in his instruments for acrylics and hand ground pastels. After 2 decades of performing with Cajun rock band Loup Garou, Jimmy Mac is now creating canvases that dance between the figurative and the abstract. Hayley Gaberlavage is inspired by a love of fashion, furniture, and design creating perceptual eye-candy with a color scheme reminiscent of a retro 1970s interior. Her paintings present the figurative by creating graphic patterns, creating a canvas that is playful, unique, and very much alive. Vitalija Svencionyte offers a colorful and abstract tribute to Louisiana’s contemporary jazz and blues. Her current work features portraits of musicians painted through the point of view of their instruments, thus conveying something improvisational and interpretive, much like a visual-jazz experience.
Join us on Friday, October 2nd, 6 pm at Galerie Gigi for an opening reception with the artists. The exhibition runs at Galerie Gigi from October 2nd – the 30th, Thursday through Sat 11am to 5pm. For more information visit www.galeriegigineworleans.com or contact Galerie Gigi director, Lindsay Viner at (713) 385-7890 or lindsay.viner@gmail.com.

CoLAB Projects presents Ann Schwab: ‘PURE’
Work displayed within postcard - Maple Seed: Horizontal Suture, mixed-media and encaustic, 4” x 6” x 1.5”
October 3 – 31, 2009
Opening Artist Reception: October 3, 2009 from 6pm – 9pm during ‘Art for Arts’ Sake’
"My photographic work depicts different steps in the process of coping with physical and emotional trauma, the physical wounds often acting as metaphors for emotional ones. Depiction of uncomfortable, disquieting acts, evidence of the sources of strength within and the course of healing provide trauma and healing as the point and counter point in the stages of affliction and recovery.
This current body of work – PURE – focuses on the regenerative, curative power of the natural world. The exaltation of the humble, the reverence of the beauty and singularity of form and the evocation elicited by a site or entity are presented as a balm for healing from injury.
Plants or natural forms figure prominently in my work. The human healing process is metaphorically paralleled and facilitated by nature. The aesthetics/beauty of nature allows for a rejuvenation of the spirit, and function as a wellspring of strength. Also, the self-healing capabilities of plants are contrasted with the human process of healing. I am fascinated with a plant’s ability to regenerate. I draw parallels between our human methods of overcoming trauma– both emotional and physical– and the growth processes of the natural world.
For the Lilt installation, and the other works based on maple seeds, I was captivated by the dual fragility and durability of these seeds. Their diaphanous structures– seemingly so tenuous– are tenacious, and result in the propagation of the species. These seeds have a strength that belies their delicate appearance.
In both the Ultrasounds series and in Linger, this parallel between our human progress and the growth processes of the natural world manifests itself in a different manner. While viewing jellyfish, I was struck by the similarity of their movements in the water with the movements of my unborn son in the amniotic fluid of the womb. The elegant, languorous movements of the jellyfish were hypnotic and soothing. I was again made aware of the commonalities of all living organisms and the underlying connections between us.
Formally, I enjoy creating relationships between disparate elements. And, through the use of multiples and serials of prints, I am able to reveal narratives and to draw correlations between seemingly incongruous elements. In Ultrasounds, I have created a relationship between an image and a sound component. When experienced in conjunction with one another, each element becomes greater than the sum of its parts– and maintains a symbiotic dependency. By utilizing a variety of materials, I can develop a more interactive piece of work with which the viewer can have a dialogue. In Lilt, by freeing the image from the confines of the standard rectangle, and by giving it a three-dimensional form, the images become interactive with the viewer’s space– blurring the edge of where the piece ends and the outside world begins. Employing varied media and alternative formats allows me a simultaneous freedom and accuracy which traditional photography alone does not provide. It allows me to correlate my idea with my piece more exactly to most effectively convey my message.” – Ann Schwab

CoLAB Project Presents, ‘Holy Cards and Other Versions of Mortality’
Immaculate Open Heart of Mary and Sacred Open Heart of Jesus, mixed-media on shrinky dink, 5”x3.5” each
CoLAB Projects presents
Jessica Goldfinch: ‘Holy Cards and Other Versions of Mortality’
September 5 – 27, 2009
Opening Artist Reception: September 5, 2009 from 6pm – 9pm
Artist Statement:
"Many religious myths have parallel storylines and meaning, and are thought to have the same historical point of origin. To explore this complex nature of religion, the Holy Card series collapses religious concept and imagery into one ideal, incorporating iconography from the Egyptian bird god Horus to Michelangelo’s Pietà, as well as other religious signifiers such as the Christian cross, the veil of Muslim faith, and the Hindi multiple-armed figures. In repealing the fourth-century Nicene Creed and humanizing the divine, the series is intended to depict humanist “religious” imagery that fits human concerns and needs more truthfully in our times. These works are meant to investigate the commonalities of humanity and to dissect the global clash of cultures and values present in our world today. Although the works illustrate the mystery and beauty of religion, they also are intended to be ironic and secular — an attempt to humanize the concept of “god.”– Jessica Goldfinch
About the Artist:
Growing up in an urban commune in 1970s New Orleans, Jessica Goldfinch was exposed to unconventional worldviews from a very early age. From her elementary school years at the countercultural Free School through her graduate studies at the University of New Orleans, Jessica focused on studying world ideologies and creatively incorporating them into her art. Jessica's artistic curiosity has led her to travel to places as diverse as Nicaragua, Indonesia, and central India, and she has frequently incorporated both iconographic elements and an Asian sense of balance in her work. Raised as a Secular Humanist but schooled in many other religions from her upbringing, academic studies, and travels, she is fascinated with blind faith as well as religious artwork from an outsider's perspective. Religious views of mortality infuse her work, and are often framed in scientific depictions of issues of life and death.
Jessica Goldfinch received her MFA in Sculpture, BA in Fine Arts and BA in Sociology from The University of New Orleans. Since 2000, her artwork has been exhibited in over 40 different museums, universities, art centers and galleries in New Orleans, throughout the gulf coast of the United States, Washington, DC, New York and Europe. Throughout her exhibition history, Jessica Goldfinch's artwork has been reviewed extensively in the Times-Picayune, Gambit, and New Orleans Art Review. Her work has also been reviewed regionally in the Mobile Register and Gulf Coast Review, nationally in Art Papers, and internationally in the Osterreich Journal (Austria).
Holy Cards and Other Versions of Mortality’ will be viewable online at www.colabprojects.com beginning September 6, 2009. A forthcoming companion exhibition book with an introductory essay by noted art critic D. Eric Bookhardt will be released on September 15, 2009.
THE MAGNIFICENT 7
From Galerie Gigi:
THE MAGNIFICENT 7
PRESS RELEASE
WHO: Group exhibition featuring 7 local artists
WHAT: "The Magnificent 7" art exhibition
WHEN: September 5th - October 1st, Opening Reception Sept. 5th at 6PM
WHERE: Galerie Gigi, 627 St. Peter (In the Quarter between Royal and Chartres)
We are thrilled to announce the unveiling of “The Magnificent 7” at
Galerie Gigi. The much anticipated group show, curated by Terrence
Sanders, features work by artists Blaine Capone, Colin Meneghini,
Anthony Carriere, Tony Nozero, Bruce Davenport, Steve Soltis, and Chad
Moore.
The Magnificent 7 is an important exhibition featuring our top seven
local rising stars of the contemporary art world. This show features a
group of artists with styles and backgrounds as diverse, unique, and
eccentric as the populous of this city.
The 9th ward, homegrown, self-taught talent, Bruce Davenport is best
known for his ink drawings portraying the marching bands from his
youth. Detroit native and proud New Orleans transplant, Tony Nozero
has switched gears from professional musician to visual artist,
creating an astonishingly deep and prolific body of work in his last
few years in the city. Anthony Carriere, who's upbringing was seeped
in Southwest Louisiana's Cajun french culture, made his own toys from
found and created objects as a child; this sense of playfulness
coupled with a compulsive need to discover and create informs his
current collage work. This list goes on and on.
"The Magnificent 7 features New Orleans Artists who articulate
figurative relations in their work", explains curator Terrence
Sanders. "New Orleans has a strong tradition of draftsman who are
rooted in the practice of drawing and painting. These young draftsman
featured in this exhibition are the not so distant cousins of Dali,
Van Gogh, Basquiat, and even Alex Katz." While the figure is a
powerful tool for the artists, each piece articulates its message
through a diverse range of techniques and processes, from
impressionistic brush strokes, to collage work reminiscent of the
surrealists, to the direct and concise message of graffiti art. "New
Orleans is fast growing into a Contemporary Art hub" explains Sanders,
"but will never in my opinion lose it's influence on new painters that
explore the representational aspects of the human figure."
Join us on September 5th, 6 pm at Galerie Gigi for an opening
reception with the artists. The exhibition runs at Galerie Gigi from
Sept.5th to Oct. 1st, Thursday through Sat 11am to 5pm. For more

This Saturday, August 8th from 6-9pm, please join the galleries on Royal Street in the French Quarter for DIRTY LINEN NIGHT!
About: Dirty Linen Night was founded by the artists at one small Royal Street gallery in 2001, as a tongue-in-cheek way to invite visitors to an Art Party during the slowest month of the year. Since then, DLN has taken place anually, a week after its inspiration, Julia Street's "White Linen Night" (a not-to-be-missed Art Event in The Arts District on the First Saturday of every August.)
Mission: To feature the unique Artist-run Galleries, the shops and other businesses of the Royal Street Artist's District, to and bring attention to the uniqueness of this community, which is all within walking distance in one of the most Historic neighborhoods in the country.
Galleries and Shops in the Artist's District produce all manner of art, from original oils, water colors, to sculpture, glass, prints and mixed media. The street abounds with unique shops that carry clothing, jewelry, home accessories, perfume, decorative arts, floral and topiary crafts, antiques, hats, wigs and much more.
There are also coffee shops, restaurants, a post office, museums, and lovely hotels on this stretch of Royal Street.
** Afterparty Information - FREE! - W French Quarter 8-10 pm **
The W French Quarter will feature a new series of large-scale paintings by local emerging artist Chris Kaiser. The new series “Hotter than July, Notes for a Greener New Orleans” is inspired by the unusual combination of Sesame Street, local music and greening New Orleans to spread the message that sustainability is a shared effort.
FREE to the public and benefiting Tipitina’s Foundation ($5 suggested donation,) the event runs Saturday, August 8th from 8-10 p.m. at the W French Quarter Hotel at 316 Chartres Street. See great art, enjoy tasty treats from BACCO and complimentary VeeV Açaí Spirit eco-friendly cocktails, you may even hear a surprise…
“I believe it’s important to utilize our passions to create positive change in the world,” Kaiser said. “New Orleans music is the reason I’m part of this community. I want that music to continue and hope this show communicates the importance of working together to sustain the culture of New Orleans.”
Don’t miss you chance to be at the weekend’s most exciting event, that's certain to be hotter than July!

Make it Right: From Concept to Community: CAC
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 1 at Whitney White Linen Night
In December 2007, more than two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Lower 9th Ward, the once-vibrant neighborhood was still silent and razed and the community frustrated by the lack of rebuilding progress. After touring the area and meeting with neighborhood groups and families, actor Brad Pitt was moved by the injustice he saw to "Make It Right." Pitt created the Make It Right Foundation to help the Lower 9th Ward recover by building 150 affordable, green high quality design homes in the neighborhood closest to the Industrial Canal levee breach.
From Pitt's concept, a thriving and growing community has grown. Fourteen families now live on the site, 19 homes are under construction and another 49 families are in process. The first 13 local, national and international architects who contributed their designs to Make It Right based their work on the traditional New Orleans "shotgun" home. In June 2009, a second round of 14 architects submitted designs based on traditional New Orleans' "duplexes" (two-family homes). For the first time, the models of the duplex designs will be on display beginning August 1 at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. In addition, the exhibition, Make It Right: From Concept to Community, will trace the evolution of the first generation of houses from design to finished houses and thriving neighborhood, and detail the pioneering materials, processes and technologies being used in the Lower 9th Ward that will benefit communities across America.
Gallery hours: Thursday through Sunday, 11am-4pm.
Gallery admission: $5/general, $3/students & seniors, FREE To CAC members.

Support Dirty Linen Night, Forget the Rest!
The status of Dirty Linen Night, discussed here, is known! It appears that the *FREE* Dirty Linen Night is still on for August 8th from 6-9pm, despite the Vieux Carre Soiree's simultaneous, more corporate (read: cheesy) pirate-themed event. WHERE: Galerie Gigi, 627 St. Peter (In the Quarter between Royal and Chartres)

"Dirty Linen Night" No More?
According to an article here, a beloved New Orleans tradition - Dirty Linen Night - has been usurped by the "Vieux Carre' Soiree". Currently, it is being reported that the founder of Dirty Linen Night owns the trademark "Dirty Linen Night". This year's producer of the event, Fleur de Lis Consulting, along with Glazer's Companies of Louisiana and the Young Professionals Society, decided to change the name. The Dirty Linen Night event, held annually one week after its White Linen Night counterpart on Julia Street, (this year on August 1,) has not been reached for comment.
The Vieux Carre Soiree is asking for interested attendees to visit their Facebook fan page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Vieux-Carre-Soiree/120639040943
More information as it becomes available.

Steve Martin Concept Studio Gallery
Steve Martin Studio Concept Gallery
The mission of Steve Martin Concept Gallery is to provide an approachable exhibition space in the New Orleans area for experimental and often under-represented art projects dismissed by traditional galleries and museums. A pioneer in the local visual arts scene, Steve Martin Studio fills a void, left by established museums and commercial art galleries, and allows opportunities for emerging artists and alternative art forms to be exhibited publicly.
Steve Martin Studio Concept Gallery plans an exhibition schedule of at least 6 shows per year. The gallery seeks diversity in its programming and embraces submissions that utilize materials and concepts both inside and outside the bounds of traditional art. Submissions are reviewed by a committee, and are generally submitted at least four months in advance. Artists from around the world may apply for exhibition.
For at least two shows per season, Steve Martin Studio Concept Gallery seeks to unite local artist with national or international artist through either a juried competition or guest curated shows. An integral component in the objectives of the gallery, this program is threefold in purpose. First, it serves to attract national or international artists to New Orleans, and to expose the community to experimental art projects from a diversity of cultural backgrounds. Second, the program intensifies the experience of the national or international artists: as they show alongside local artists, these artists experience the community on a local level. This provides the artists expanded access to local resources and allows the artist to build a relationship with the community. Finally, the program furthers the experience of the local artist. In showing with an artist of similar interests or background from outside New Orleans, the local artist develops a knowledge and relationship with artists of other art communities, thereby gaining access to art communities outside New Orleans.
A converted row-house, located in one of the Thirteen Sisters on Julia Street in the Heart of the New Orleans Art District, Steve Martin Studio Concept Gallery offers several rooms of exhibition. The exhibition venue is approximately 290 square feet, the interior is comprised of white walls standing twelve feet tall, with bright, even lighting, typical historic architectural elements and details, whitewashed cypress flooring and large historic styled windows and doors.
Beyond the physical presentation space, the Steve Martin Fine Art website will be a vital accompaniment to the exhibitions and creates an additional exhibition space preserving and presenting with increased public accessibility the accomplishments of the gallery and its exhibitions. The website is constantly expanding, and submissions are welcomed continually.
Steve Martin Studio Concept Gallery eeks to promote the practices of contemporary artists from the local, national and international scenes. The multidisciplinary program will comprise exhibitions, lectures and meetings with artists, in addition to art publication activity and the production of thematic projects and new artworks. Its aims are to present a calendar of activities that facilitate critical discussion and reflection within the community.
A selection committee will choose from projects submitted by artists or curators, while other projects will be generated by invitation. Each project is given the support required for its achievement. Steve Martin Studio Concept Gallery offers a broad platform for ideas. By taking on curators, sponsors, and contributors from other horizons Steve Martin Studio Concept Gallery allows a greater number of artists, collectors, and the viewing public access to enjoy the benefits of its resources thereby extending debates on contemporary art to a wider audience. In proposing new ways of exhibiting artwork, Steve Martin Studio Concept Gallery questions various means and attitudes towards art dissemination. Thematic projects initiated and produced by the staff stimulate exploratory artistic creation and facilitate the development of critical thinking through lectures and publicity they receive. Our goal in creating such activities is to serve as a focal point where the broader public, artists, curators, collectors and researchers visiting and from the New Orleans area and elsewhere can experience dynamic encounters and discussions around contemporary art.

12 x 12 x 122 at the BECA Gallery
12 x 12 x 122 concludes on Saturday, July 3rd. Please join us in person or gallery installation photos and the 22 featured artists' works and information are now viewable online at http://www.becagallery.com/index.php
BECA gallery is pleased to present its Summer exhibition: '12 x 12 x 122' now through July 3, 2009.
In an unusual twist on what appears to be a traditional, if not somewhat restrictive, Call to Artists, BECA gallery presents '12 x 12 x 122', an experimental, gallery packed group exhibition of over 400 works. The show is composed of works on canvas sized 12x12 inches, spanning all mediums, submitted by 122 artists from around the world. Many artists have taken the confines of the parameters set forth within the initial Call to Artists as a challenge and stretched those parameters to suit their individual aesthetic approaches and conceptual realms.
The purpose of this non-juried experimental, group exhibition is to discover and highlight new approaches by emerging contemporary artists and by those established artists who are stretching their work into unfamiliar territory. Working within the parameters of a format of 12x12 inches (30.5 cm x 30.5 cm) on canvas has helped to sharpen the uniqueness of each individual work.
The following 22 artists have been selected as featured artists of the '12 x 12 x 122' exhibition:
Patricia 'Muffin' Sills Bernstein, Kerry Brooks, Jorinde Chang, Hollis Cooper, Meghan Fleming, Marilyn Gillis,
Monique Given, Anna Gratovich, Karla Hackenmiller,
Meryt Harding, Sarah Harvey, Barbara Keir, Lory Lockwood, Fran Nagy, Jack Niven, Colleen Ringrose, Patti Russotti, Carolyn Smith, HANSEN Thiam Sun, Richard Sweeney,
Allie Tsypin, Michelle Wuttke
Their works and artist information are now viewable online at: http://www.becagallery.com/index.php
Works in this show are priced from $50 - $1,775. Artists receive 75% of the sale of their work so it is a great opportunity to support emerging artists while experiencing a very different take on what an exhibition of works on canvas might be. All remaining profits are donated to The BECA Foundation.

Dirty Linen Night - August 8th
Entergy KidsFree Children's Art Gallery @ the CAC!
On View June 6 - July 12, 2009
I AM NOT A CELEBRITY
On view in the Entergy KidsFree Children's Art Gallery, first floor.
For her first solo show, artist Monica Tyran created twelve portraits of the more than 300 Freedom Riders. In 1960, when the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed the segregation of interstate rail and bus terminals, Freedom Riders, both black and white, rode across the south in order to stress a need for change in the country. Jackson, Mississippi, became the focus of the Riders' campaign because so many were arrested there and, therefore, Tyran, uses mug-shots of those arrested for her inspiration.
Tyran is a current Dillard University Student, a member of the YA/YA Guild, and plans to attend graduate school.

Louisiana ArtWorks: The Trajectory of Analogue to Digital
Join Louisiana ArtWorks at 7 PM on Tuesday, June 30th for our monthly "Art Sessions" panel, "The Trajectory of Analogue to Digital". Practices in film and video, photography and painting have mutated over the past decade with our culture's mass shift into the daily use of digital media. Whether to move an art practice into the digital realm and to what degree comes with a host of considerations about creation, presentation and distribution. This panel reflects on what is lost, gained, and transformed in this transition. Panelists Michel Varisco, Stephen Collier, Gerald Cannon, and Debra Howell; moderated by Courtney Egan. Panel will be held at 725 Howard Avenue at Carondelet.

Bruce Keyes Exhibition @ McKenna Museum
MCKENNA MUSEUM & ARTVOICES PRESENTS ‘SPIRIT OF NEW ORLEANS’ BY BRUCE KEYES
June 27 through July 11, 2009
NEW ORLEANS, June 17, 2009—McKenna Museum is pleased to announce a new exhibition of images from the recently released book "Spirit of New Orleans" by Bruce Keyes at 2003 Carondelet Street, New Orleans from June 27 through July 11, 2009.
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 27th 6 to 8pm
Bruce Keyes: “My focus is on the people of New Orleans, performers, spectators, their gestures, postures, joyful expressions and the like. Their body language and playful spirit is what I capture. The subtractive quality of the b&w images and how it portrays the stature and importance of the subject is what attracts me.”
Art Critic Arin Black: “It’s the sweet decay, the slow motion, the willingness to stop and let the joy seep in, that lets New Orleans take hold and not let go, and it’s present in every single image of “Spirit of New Orleans”.
Poet & Songwriter Ron Cuccia: This is not an exhibition about New Orleans, it is an exhibit of New Orleans. It comes from the heart’s eye of a native, true to the creative passion that runs through the veins like fire. Bruce Keyes captures that passion and our innocence, our sense of sacred, our mourning and our unmitigated, irrepressible joy. That’s what makes New Orleans important and that makes ‘Spirit of New Orleans’ important.”
Bruce Keyes, a native New Orleanian was born in 1950. Travels related to his Viet Nam era United States Navy service were the inspiration for his interest in photography. After years of assignment photography, he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology's School of Photographic Arts and Sciences for two years of intensive independent study. His first solo show entitled "Odyessy" was at the Noho Gallery in New York City and has been followed by numerous shows home and abroad.
‘Spirit of New Orleans’ a 30 year retrospective has been included in the (research) library archives of the New Orleans Museum of Art .
For more information on Bruce Keyes please contact Shantrelle Lewis at shantrelleplewis@gmail.com or call 504 586 7432. The Museum will be open Thursday through Saturday 11am to 4pm.

Summer Art Studios
Space: The Final Frontier starts Monday
Summer Art Studios for children and teens are underway, but it's not too late to sign up for one of the several sessions still to come. The next week-long studio for children 10-12, Space: The Final Frontier, begins Monday, and the next week-long studio for children 4-6, the Mid-Summer Mardi Gras, begins July 6. For information on these and other upcoming Summer Art Studios, click here.
June 22-26, Ages 10-12
Space: The Final Frontier
According to 20th century artist Frank Stella, "the aim of art is to create space." By examining NOMA's collection of modern and contemporary art, participants will discover how artists use different materials to create and engage space and how the viewer is affected by these choices. Hands-on projects involving printmaking, drawing, found objects and three-dimensional construction will allow the young artists to explore new methods of art-making and will highlight the art principles behind much of 20th century art.
July 6-10, Ages 4-6
Mid-Summer Mardi Gras
Who doesn't love Mardi Gras? Participants will be inspired by local artists and themes within the Museum's galleries as we celebrate our favorite holiday and learn about art! New Orleans-themed projects involving float-making, food, costuming, music and more. The week will conclude with our own parade around NOMA. Associated art elements, techniques, and imagination will be highlighted with each project, and a snack will be provided for the artists.
Wednesday, June 24, 6 p.m.
