What:
2nd Floor Gallery Exhibition: Who Loves a Garden Still His Eden Keeps
This quote, by 19th century transcendentalist Amos Bronson Alcott, is the inspiration for a fantastic interpretive garden. The idea behind the exhibition is to challenge the traditional garden constructs while inspiring the viewer experience. The following artists are included:
Kenneth Baskin (Lake Charles) fabricates oversized industrial forms in ceramic for a surreal effect
Ben Diller (Baton Rouge) fuses forms found both in the body and in the landscape into paintings and sculptures
Stephen Collier, (New Orleans) debuts a sound installation by his band Shadows of a Unicorn
Kathryn Hunter (Baton Rouge) blends traditional symbols with her signature avian imagery in metal & enamel mandalas and colorful prayer flags
Kelli Scott Kelley (Baton Rouge) explores humankind’s connections, disconnections and impact upon the animal world in narrative paintings rich with symbolism.

Louisiana ArtWorks: The Trajectory of Analogue to Digital

Join Louisiana ArtWorks at 7 PM on Tuesday, June 30th for our monthly "Art Sessions" panel, "The Trajectory of Analogue to Digital". Practices in film and video, photography and painting have mutated over the past decade with our culture's mass shift into the daily use of digital media. Whether to move an art practice into the digital realm and to what degree comes with a host of considerations about creation, presentation and distribution. This panel reflects on what is lost, gained, and transformed in this transition. Panelists Michel Varisco, Stephen Collier, Gerald Cannon, and Debra Howell; moderated by Courtney Egan. Louisiana ArtWorks' print shop is now available for individual rental. Completion of 101 Print Shop Class is required prior to shop usage. Our facility includes large and small intaglio presses, and lithography press. Rental fees are $25/day, $75/week, $130/month, $500/6 months, and $800/year. The 2008-2009 Studio Residents are celebrating the completion of the first year of Louisiana ArtWorks residency program by exhibiting work throughout the building. Additionally, the ArtVenture Marketplace is a retail store featuring fine arts and crafts from a wide variety of artists. A special highlight is a Flat File of works on paper all priced at under $500.

STUDIO RESIDENCY PROGRAM CELEBRATES A YEAR OF SUCCESS!
Louisiana ArtWorks Unveils Closing Exhibit at Peoples Health ArtVenture 2009
Scheduled for May 29th

The annual studio residency cycle that began in June 2008 at Louisiana ArtWorks (LAW) is coming to a close with a final exhibition comprised of installations throughout three floors of the building by the artist residents. The exhibition will be unveiled during Peoples Health ArtVenture 2009, the signature, annual fundraiser for Louisiana ArtWorks to be held May 29th from 7:00—11:00pm. Tickets are available online at www.louisianaartworks.org or by calling 504.571.7373.

Additionally, at the request of Honorary Chair, Arthur Roger, a number of well known artists along with the Studio Residents, have created self portraits to be sold as part of a silent auction taking place during the event. Artists participating include Jan Aronson, Jacqueline Bishop, Margaret Evangeline, Tony Fitzpatrick, Rico Gatson, Gene Koss & Francis Pavy.

A Live Auction will be emceed by Eric Paulsen of WWL-TV and will include Private Dinner Parties by Chef John Folse, Chef Greg Reggio, and Domenica, the new Chef John Besh Restaurant in the Roosevelt Hotel; and a One-of-a-kind Mignon Faget Pylon Necklace.

Another highlight of the evening will be the ArtVenture MarketPlace, a special sale of fine arts and crafts including a Flat File of works on paper including work by Brad Benischek, Mary Beyt, Jessica Bizer, Ralph Bourque, Kyle Bravo, Stephen Collier, Ben Diller, David Dubose, Margaret Evangeline, Jessica Goldfinch, Shawn Hall, Sally Heller, Chris Herbeck, Rachael Jones, Frahn Koerner, Rebecca Penton, Julie Pieri, Megan Roniger, Heather Ryan-Kelly, Stephen Sollins and David Sullivan.

Peoples Health ArtVenture 2009 will mark another milestone for Louisiana ArtWorks as the organization welcomes the founding members of the ArtVenturers’ Circle, Louisiana ArtWorks' new annual membership group. AT&T is hosting the ArtVenturers’ Lounge as a special benefit for the new members. The Lounge will feature specialty drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres provided by Palate New Orleans. Décor will be provided by CHL Linens.

The Studio Residents’ installations are being generously sponsored by J. Kerry Clayton & Paige Royer and Shell. Entertainment will feature Fredy Omar con su Cuarteto and participating restaurants include Bayona, Benedict’s Plantation, Bradley’s Best, Byblos Restaurant, Drago’s Seafood Restaurant, Emeril’s, Lil’ Dizzy’s Café, Mélange at the Ritz, Mr. B’s Bistro, Palate New Orleans, PJ’s Coffee & Tea, WOW Café Wingery and Zea Rotisserie.

Louisiana Artworks - Bronze Casting Workshops

Louisiana ArtWorks is pleased to announce Bronze Casting workshops for the month of May. Beginning and Advanced Bronze Casting will run concurrently from May 23rd through the 30th. Tuition for each workshop is $325.00 plus bronze costs at $8.00 per pound. Workshops will take place at the Louisiana ArtWorks building at 725 Howard Avenue, New Orleans, LA. Enrollment limited to 15 students per class. Course Schedule is as follows:
Saturday, May 23rd, 12-4 PM;

In Basic Bronze Casting, participants will learn the basics of making a pattern, constructing a sand mold, and bronze casting and finishing techniques utilizing the foundry and a variety of materials. The workshop is open to all levels of experience. Over the course of the workshop, each student will create up to a 12 pound bronze sculpture.

In Advanced Bronze Casting students may cast larger and more complicated patterns and the size limit for the final bronze casting is 50 pounds (larger castings may be made with instructor approval). In this class, students will learn more about the finishes and patinas of their bronze castings. Requirements for this class are completion of a previous Basic Bronze Casting class. Students with prior casting experience are also welcome to enroll, by permission of the instructor--call the Louisiana ArtWorks office to inquire.

On May 19th at 7 PM Louisiana ArtWorks will host a lecture by ABC No Rio, a collectively-run arts center on Manhattan's Lower East Side. ABC No Rio was founded in 1980 by artists committed to an actively engaged culture and a vision of expanded possibility for our lives, our neighborhoods, our cities and our society. It is a place where people share resources and ideas in an atmosphere of camaraderie and mutual support. No Rio has been a welcoming and supportive venue for many thousands of emerging artists, performers, poets and musicians. Events programming at ABC No Rio includes exhibitions, readings, performance and concerts. Facilities include a screenprinting shop. a darkroom, a 'zine library and a computer center. Affiliated projects include the NYC chapters of Books Through Bars and Food Not Bombs. ABC No Rio offer classes in photography to neighborhood youth, and has hosted meetings, workshops, forums and benefits for scores of area organizations and projects. Join Louisiana ArtWorks as we engage ABC No Rio's Director Steven Englander and former Director Peter Cramer (1983-1990) in a discussion on the development of their organization and the importance of community and artist collectives.

Dear Artists and Arts Enthusiasts,

Join us on Tuesday, April 28th at 7 PM for "Photography: The Index", the April meeting of our "Art Sessions: A Series of Discussions on Visual Contemporary Art" panel series. The photograph literally reflects its subject, inscribing its trace onto a light-sensitive surface. This fact forms a unique connection between the photograph and that which it describes. This panel considers the indexical nature of photography by looking at contemporary projects in a discussion with photographers Jerry Spagnoli, Deborah Luster, duo Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick, and freelance curator Eva Diaz; moderated by photographer Stephen Hilger. To what extent does photography's indexicality--its link to what is real--remain as the medium continues to evolve away from traditional photographic materials toward digital technologies? Books offer a unique use of time and space over other mediums. Time is frozen on the page, but advances with the turning of the page. The reader can be led forward or backward through careful design. In this class, students will work on the planning and execution of two books using two different methods of binding: pamphlet and stab bindings. One project will be a study in building narrative over the course of pages, examining pacing and the use of the page turn. The second will employ an exquisite corpse-style collaborative narrative. Small editions of each book will be created using photocopies that will then be exchanged among all the students; students will be responsible for the creation and photocopying of pages between sessions.

April 2: Workshop: Multi-layered Block Prints
Francis Pavy will review his block printing techniques utilizing prints made from linoleum, wood blocks and found objects on a variety of paper and cloth. Students will design, carve and print a small linoleum cut. This workshop will emphasize low-tech methods. Students should come to class with small line drawings they would like to transfer to the block printing process. All other materials are provided.

April 5: Art Sessions: Social Activism in the Arts

April 11: Workshop: Basic Bookbinding
Learn some basic bookbinding skills. We will make a small journal using the basic pamphlet stitch; a sketchbook consisting of several signatures together and a dust jacket; an accordion-fold book with hard-backed cloth covers, and will take a look at basic stab binding as well. All materials are provided.

WHAT: “Street Art: The Mark, Part II “, the second of two panels dealing with this exciting topic. The Panel is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $3.00.
Louisiana ArtWorks presents part II of our panel discussion on the contemporary role of street art, examining its beginnings, trends, and why sometimes getting your work out there is as simple as literally “taking it to the street”. Four artists whose work is performance-based will discuss the definitions of their artform and the different approaches they take to create their work and share it with an audience.

Street artists' work can be found on buildings, railway cars, on streets, in tunnels, and other incidental places. At what point do we define something as "art", beyond the popular definition? Artists Michael De Feo, Michael Dingler, Dan Witz, and Gabriel Flores will engage in a discussion moderated by Mia Kaplan, Co-owner of Ammo Gallery. Lecture will examine how Street Artists have branded themselves in the contemporary market. Who are their heroes, and how did the street became their preferred venue for showing work?
