Exhibit at Galerie Gigi with Jose Maria Cundin

José María Cundin

“The Unanimous Declaration of Independence of the United States of America”

June 6th through July 11th 2009

Galerie Gigi
627 St. Peter Street
New Orleans, LA 70116
(504) 525 5299

An exhibit at Galerie Gigi features an original engraving by hand of
The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America
together with a photographic report of the endeavor. The well known
artist, Jose Maria Cundin, created and directed this much acclaimed
facsimile. A limited number of prints together with its corresponding
signed and dated Certificate of Authenticity by the author, are
available to the public.

This work of art reproduces the character and calligraphy of a
document that shook the world in 1776 and continues even today to
offer inspiration to freedom-loving people everywhere.

Millennia, founded by Jose-Maria Cundin, is an international fine arts
press dedicated to the publication of documents that have served as
the cornerstones of liberty over the last thousand years.

The paper used for this impression was formulated and handmade
exclusively for this edition by the Basque papermaker Villabona,
employing age-old traditional techniques. The engravings were pulled
by Taller Mayor of Madrid, using a brass plate hand chiseled by Perico
Aspiazu of Elgoibar in the Basque Country.

In repeating in exacting detail the courageous and hopeful calligraphy
of this great manifesto, in carving the lines, the arcs and the
flourished of these noble words and signatures, we hope that our
artistry as honored both the United States and the principles upon
which this great country was founded.

On the historical release of the Millennia Edition in 1992 King Don
Juan Carlos I of Spain presented print number 0 to Present George H.
W. Bush. The following year Thomas Foley, Speaker of the House,
received print number 1 to be permanently displayed in Congress. Other
prints can be found at The Princeton Library, Johnson & Wales
University, The Naval Museum of Madrid, The Texaco Collection, the
Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia, The National Headquarters
of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Washington, DC, Spain ’92
Foundation, Washington, DC, University of Virginia, Charlottesville,
VI, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VI, among other institutions and

Arts Advocacy Update

From the Arts Council of New Orleans:

On May 20th members of the Arts Council of New Orleans joined arts organizations from across the state to participate in Arts Advocacy Day. Arts representatives set up presentations and arts displays in the state capitol to continue arts advocacy efforts, personally urging legislators to support the restoration of funds to state arts funding in House Bill 1 (HB1) in the state’s 2009-2010 operating budget.

After facing a threat of losing $2,468,938 in statewide Decentralized Arts Funding and $798,624 in Statewide Arts Grants, the bill passed with funding to these programs restored. These successful advocacy efforts are thanks to the Louisiana Partnership for Arts Advocacy (LPAA), who mobilized individuals and arts organizations statewide resulting in more than 75,000 emails to legislators asking for a reinstatement of arts grant funding.

HB1 is currently in Senate Finance where public testimony will be taken today and Monday. The Arts Council of New Orleans will continue to keep you posted on as budget process proceeds. As a stakeholder in Louisiana’s cultural economy it is important to support the LPAA’s efforts, especially as state arts funding will face increased challenges in the coming years.

Please consider supporting the LPAA efforts to safeguard our state’s investment in the arts. Visit The Louisiana Partnership for Arts Advocacy website to join our efforts and become part of the larger voice to support continued funding to Louisiana’s artists.

HELP! Save the Louisiana Division of the Arts!

Save the Louisiana Division of the Arts - http://www.crt.state.la.us/arts/
Save DOA - the state arts funding agency supporting established arts institutions, nurture both emerging arts organizations and our overall cultural economy.

Several weeks ago the House Appropriations Committee wisely RESTORED funding for Decentralized Arts Funding and Statewide Arts Funding grants in the state budget. The full House will start debating HB1, the budget, tomorrow (Thurs, May 14), and we need to make sure our legislators know we want the funding to STAY in the budget.

Please take a moment to contact your representatives and urge them to SUPPORT THE AMENDMENT RESTORING ARTS FUNDING. Visit http://www.lparts.org/ (on the lower left), enter your zip code into the box marked "Write Your Legislators" and follow the directions from there. It only takes a moment. If you know any of the representatives, feel free to add a personal note such as "the arts organizations in our parish need your support through your vote to approve the House Appropriations Committee Amendment restoring Decentralized Arts Funding and Statewide Grant Programs to the CRT budget."

Thanks for your support!

Photography: The Index - April 28th at Louisiana ArtWorks

From the Louisiana ArtWorks:

Dear Artists and Arts Enthusiasts,

Join us on Tuesday, April 28th at 7 PM for "Photography: The Index", the April meeting of our "Art Sessions: A Series of Discussions on Visual Contemporary Art" panel series. The photograph literally reflects its subject, inscribing its trace onto a light-sensitive surface. This fact forms a unique connection between the photograph and that which it describes. This panel considers the indexical nature of photography by looking at contemporary projects in a discussion with photographers Jerry Spagnoli, Deborah Luster, duo Keith Calhoun and Chandra McCormick, and freelance curator Eva Diaz; moderated by photographer Stephen Hilger. To what extent does photography's indexicality--its link to what is real--remain as the medium continues to evolve away from traditional photographic materials toward digital technologies? Suggested donation $3.00. Discussion will be held at Louisiana ArtWorks, 725 Howard Avenue at Carondelet.
